UCL Bloomsbury
Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT
UCL's historic main campus is centred around Gower Street in Bloomsbury. The residential recommendations on this page are primarily for students whose teaching is based here.
UCL Property & Area Guide
For an international student arriving in London for the first time, “near UCL” can mean very different things.
You could live moments from the main Bloomsbury campus. Walk from Fitzrovia. Choose the more residential character of Marylebone. Live in a modern development around King’s Cross. Or accept a short journey in return for a completely different style of home.
The right answer depends on more than distance alone. Renov8 helps you understand how university location, property, commute, neighbourhood and lifestyle fit together.
Before you choose an area
Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT
UCL's historic main campus is centred around Gower Street in Bloomsbury. The residential recommendations on this page are primarily for students whose teaching is based here.
Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Stratford, E20
UCL East includes One Pool Street and Marshgate. If your course is based here, your sensible search geography is very different from a Bloomsbury-based student.
One Canada Square, Canary Wharf, E14
Students whose programme is primarily taught at the School of Management's Canary Wharf location should build their search around that location rather than automatically searching around Bloomsbury.
Renov8 tip
CONFIRM WHERE YOU WILL ACTUALLY BE TAUGHT BEFORE SIGNING A TENANCY.
Some UCL programmes use different or multiple locations.

The advantage of UCL Bloomsbury is that there is no single direction from which a student must approach the university.
Walkable neighbourhoods sit on several sides of campus, while London’s transport network makes a much wider selection of prime central neighbourhoods practical.
THAT GIVES YOU OPTIONS.

Compare your options

Area deep dive 01
Best for: Walking to UCL
The obvious geographical starting point for Gower Street and the heart of London's academic quarter.
Bloomsbury's residential stock is dominated by period buildings.
Searching purely for maximum proximity can unnecessarily restrict property choice.
If walking to UCL is non-negotiable, Bloomsbury goes directly onto the shortlist.
We would still compare it against Fitzrovia and surrounding options before assuming the closest property is automatically the strongest.
Best for the student who says:
“I WANT UNIVERSITY ON MY DOORSTEP.”

Area deep dive 02
Best for: Walking + London lifestyle
Immediately west of Bloomsbury with highly practical UCL access and a very different central London atmosphere.
Property here ranges from heritage stock to high-specification new development.
It is intensely central and exact street choice matters.
For many premium international UCL searches, Fitzrovia offers one of the strongest combinations of campus access, property choice and central London lifestyle.
Best for the student who says:
“I WANT TO WALK TO UCL — BUT I WANT LONDON OUTSIDE MY FRONT DOOR TOO.”

Area deep dive 03
Best for: Prime residential London
A more refined and residential central-London environment while remaining within practical reach of UCL.
Some of the most recognisable prime residential stock in central London.
Higher rental positioning and not every address is a short walk to campus.
For a family-backed international student wanting a high-quality private home in an established prime neighbourhood, Marylebone can be more compelling than simply living as close to UCL as possible.
Best for the student who says:
“I CARE AS MUCH ABOUT WHERE I COME HOME TO AS HOW QUICKLY I GET TO UNIVERSITY.”

Area deep dive 04
Best for: Modern buildings and connectivity
Close enough to remain highly practical for Bloomsbury while providing some of the strongest modern residential stock around UCL.
The strongest concentration of contemporary buildings near the Bloomsbury campus.
More urban and development-led than Bloomsbury or Marylebone. Micro-location matters.
If the brief starts with “modern building, concierge, high specification and excellent transport”, King’s Cross deserves serious consideration.
Best for the student who says:
“I WANT THE BUILDING TO FEEL AS MODERN AS THE CITY.”

Area deep dive 05
Best for: A better home in return for a short journey
Excellent transport means map distance does not necessarily equal inconvenience.
A broad mix of modern and period options at prime positioning.
The everyday university strategy becomes public transport rather than walking.
We would not reject Paddington simply because it looks further west. If the property is materially better and the transport works, it can make complete sense.
Best for the student who says:
“I'M HAPPY WITH A SHORT JOURNEY IF IT GETS ME A BETTER HOME.”

Area deep dive 06
Best for: Calmer residential surroundings and space
Offers a different lifestyle from the immediate university district while remaining within practical reach.
Scale and porterage are more readily available here than beside campus.
Not a campus-doorstep lifestyle.
For certain international families prioritising the quality and setting of the home, St John’s Wood can easily justify the commute.
Best for the student who says:
“I WANT MY HOME TO FEEL RESIDENTIAL, NOT LIKE I LIVE ON CAMPUS.”
Other areas to consider

Why consider it
